The Best Vitamin C Serums You Can Buy in Cameroon
Brightening, even-toning, and a real defence against pollution. Here are the vitamin C serums worth your FCFA.
Vitamin C is the workhorse of every brightening routine, and for good reason. It fades dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, boosts collagen production, neutralises free radicals from pollution and UV, and adds a critical second layer of antioxidant defence on top of your sunscreen. For African skin in particular, where uneven tone and post-acne marks are the most common skincare complaint, vitamin C earns its place in almost every routine.
The forms of vitamin C, ranked
Not all vitamin C is the same. The gold standard is L-ascorbic acid (LAA), used at 10–20%. It's the most studied form, with the strongest evidence for brightening, collagen synthesis, and antioxidant protection. The catch is that it's unstable: it oxidises quickly, particularly in heat and light, turning yellow and then brown — which is why packaging and storage matter as much as concentration. In Cameroonian temperatures, an LAA serum that lives on a sunny shelf for two months is essentially expired.
Newer derivatives solve the stability problem at the cost of slightly less proven results. Ethyl ascorbic acid is the closest to LAA in performance, oil-soluble, and very stable. Ascorbyl glucoside is gentler and works well for sensitive skin. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) has antibacterial properties that make it useful for acne-prone skin. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is lipid-soluble, penetrates deeply, and is great in oil-based serums. For most people in hot climates, a stable derivative or a lower-percentage LAA in opaque packaging is the smarter pick.
What to look for in a formula
Concentration matters, but it's not everything. A 10% ethyl ascorbic acid in airless packaging will outperform a 20% LAA in a clear glass dropper that's been on a shelf for six months. Look for opaque or amber bottles, airless pumps, and formulas with supporting antioxidants like vitamin E and ferulic acid — the classic CE Ferulic combination that has decades of research behind it. pH matters too: LAA needs a pH below 3.5 to penetrate, which can sting on first use. Build up tolerance gradually.
When and how to apply
Morning, after cleansing and toner, before moisturiser and SPF. Three to four drops, patted into the face, neck, and the back of the hands. Wait a minute for it to absorb, then continue with your routine. The pairing of vitamin C in the morning and SPF on top is one of the highest-impact combinations in skincare — vitamin C destroys the free radicals that get past your sunscreen, and sunscreen prevents the new damage that vitamin C is trying to undo.
What to pair it with, and what to avoid
Vitamin C plays beautifully with niacinamide despite outdated internet rumours to the contrary. Modern formulations have proven the pair are stable and complementary. It also pairs with hyaluronic acid, peptides, and ceramides. Avoid using it at the same time as a strong AHA or BHA acid — the pH conflict can irritate. Save your acids and retinol for night.
Storage in Cameroonian heat
If your home regularly gets above 28°C, store your vitamin C in the fridge. This is not vanity; it's chemistry. Heat accelerates oxidation, and an oxidised vitamin C serum is no longer effective and can actually contribute to free radical damage. A small skincare fridge is one of the best investments for serious skincare in tropical climates.
