A Day-and-Night Lip Care Routine That Actually Works
Plump, soft, healthy lips don't happen by accident.
Lips are skin too β thinner, more delicate, more exposed than anywhere else on your face, with no oil glands of their own. They're the first place to show dehydration, the first place to chap in harmattan, and one of the first areas where pigmentation builds up over years of unprotected sun exposure. A short, deliberate lip care routine pays back enormously in comfort, softness, and the way colour applies on top.
The four pillars of lip care
Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise, protect. The same logic as the rest of your skincare, scaled down for a smaller surface. Skip any one and you'll see the result within days.
Daily cleansing
Lips collect food residue, lipstick pigment, and environmental debris through the day. At night, micellar water on a cotton round or a gentle cleansing balm will dissolve everything without stripping. Avoid harsh soap or face washes designed for oily skin β your lip skin is too thin to handle them.
Exfoliation, twice a week max
A gentle sugar scrub, an enzyme exfoliant, or a soft toothbrush works for once or twice weekly exfoliation. The goal is to remove dead skin cells so your moisturiser can absorb properly. Be gentle β over-scrubbing causes inflammation, which causes more pigmentation. Avoid daily exfoliation; lip skin renews on its own and can't keep up with constant stripping.
Hydration and barrier repair
After exfoliating or cleansing, apply a thick balm with occlusive ingredients (lanolin, shea butter, beeswax) and humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin). Apply it generously at night and let it work overnight. By morning your lips will feel like they've had a full skincare routine of their own.
Daily SPF for lips
Lips burn easily and pigment easily. A tinted balm with SPF 30 is the ideal daily product β it gives you light colour, hydration, and sun protection in one. Reapply through the day, especially after eating or drinking. Pigmented lips often respond beautifully to consistent SPF over months as new sun damage stops accumulating.
Pigmentation and lightening
If your lips have darkened over time from sun, smoking, or coffee, the path back is patient. Daily SPF, exfoliation twice a week, and a vitamin C-containing balm or serum at night can lighten lips over three to six months. Avoid aggressive lightening products marketed for lips; many contain irritants that worsen the problem.
The night ritual
Apply a heavy lanolin or beeswax-based balm before bed every night for two weeks. Watch your lips transform. This is the single most underrated step in any skincare routine.
