Minimalist Skincare: 7 Products That Cover Everything
A capsule routine for people who hate shelf clutter.
Skincare has a clutter problem. Walk into any bathroom and you'll find half-used bottles of products that someone bought because of an Instagram post and never quite worked into a routine. The truth is that you don't need twenty products. You need seven good ones, used consistently, for at least three months. This is the capsule routine.
The seven products
1. Gentle low-pH gel cleanser. Twice a day, every day. Sets the foundation for everything else. 2. Hydrating toner with hyaluronic acid. After cleansing, before any active. 3. Vitamin C serum (antioxidant, brightening, morning use). 4. Niacinamide or retinol serum (oil control, anti-ageing, evening use; alternate based on your priority). 5. Lightweight gel-cream moisturiser. Twice a day. 6. SPF 50 PA++++. Every morning, no exceptions. 7. Weekly mask β clay for oily, hydrating sheet for dry, exfoliating for textured. Your only specialty product.
Why this works
Every product in this list does a job that nothing else can do. Cleanser cleans. Toner hydrates. Vitamin C protects. Active serum treats. Moisturiser seals. SPF protects from new damage. Mask boosts as needed. There's no overlap, no redundancy, and no product that exists just because the marketing was good.
What you can skip
Eye cream β your face moisturiser usually works. Toner pads β overpriced toner. Most face mists β water + glycerin in a bottle. Multi-step ampoules β your serum already does the job. Sleeping masks β your night moisturiser is enough.
Building your seven
If you're starting from scratch, build over two months. Month one: cleanser, moisturiser, SPF. Get the basics right and consistent. Month two: add toner and one serum. Month three: add the second serum and your weekly mask. Trying to add seven products at once is overwhelming and makes it impossible to identify what's working.
Budget tiers
You don't need expensive products to do this well. A complete capsule routine in Cameroon can be built in the 30,000β60,000 FCFA range using Korean and pharmacy brands. Spending more rarely buys better results β the same actives at the same percentages perform similarly across price brackets.
Adjusting for skin type
Oily skin: niacinamide as your active, gel moisturiser, clay mask weekly. Dry skin: ceramide serum as your active, cream moisturiser, hydrating mask weekly. Combination: niacinamide on T-zone, ceramide on cheeks, lightweight cream all over. Sensitive: skip vitamin C, use centella as your active, fragrance-free everything.
When to evolve the routine
Add products only when you have a specific problem the seven don't solve. Persistent breakouts? Add a BHA serum. New pigmentation? Add tranexamic acid. Visible fine lines? Upgrade to retinol. Add one product at a time, give it eight weeks, and assess.
